Dear Comrades and Sisters,
We are Changing, getting more involved and believe me, we are growing in this Great Department.
The Department of South Carolina has turned the corner. All of our tax problems are behind us, the new C/A building is up, tables and chairs have been purchased through your generous donations and we are making progress towards getting our Department on sound footing with regards to being in compliance with our State and National by-laws. On that note, check out the Quartermaster’s Corner for important general orders I will be issuing shortly to get our Department in even greater compliance.
Soon we will be issuing a check to the Fisher House which you have donated generously to. We have already sent a check to National Headquarters Operation Up-link program which many of you donated towards. Thank all of you who contributed towards the Fisher House and Operation Up-link!
I have one great concern and that is, we are slipping somewhat on membership. I really thought that we would be over 95% by now in membership. It has always been my belief, that if a Post is actively involved with our core programs, recruiting membership should not be that hard. If your Post is doing the work in your community, potential new members will want to belong to your Post or Auxiliary. But if a Post is not doing nothing, then what do you really have to offer? Also, you can not just sit and wait for members to come to you; you need to be out there recruiting and showing all that your Post or Auxiliary does. Emphasis on what your Post does for veterans is the key. Let the community know that you can help veterans and point them in the right direction with regards to the many services they are entitled to.
Now that the holidays are over and you had great visits with your family and relatives (but are broke), let’s now get back to work and put the Department where it should be– OVER THE TOP! National is really looking at us this year and have marveled at the many steps forward, which we have taken together. We are getting back to the basics. I just hope that we can all come together in all areas and be the most improved Department in a total of 54 National Departments (including those overseas). We won’t get an award for most improved Department, but we can certainly regain our dignity and respect.
Thank all of you that have worked so hard these past six months. I really appreciate all of you.
In Comradeship,
Johnny L. Wilson
SC State Commander
